Celebrating The History of Extension in Henry County
History of Extension in Henry County History of Extension in Henry County

4H Agent Cathy Toole displays the 4H Apron made by Rose Barmore in 1935 at the Celebrating Extension Memories program held this past Sunday at Twin Oaks Assisted Living. The apron was an amazing piece of stitchery with French seams and handmade buttonholes and will be used as a learning tool at the current 4H sewing classes being taught.

Over 100 past, present and future Extension Volunteers enjoyed reminiscing over the many 4H Scrapbooks and memorabilia displayed at the Celebrating Extension Memories Program. The purpose of the program was to recognize the many faithful Extension Leaders who have made a proud history for Extension in Henry County. The first Extension Agent in Henry County was Carl Malone who started in 1925 thanks to forward thinking of J.C. Helburn the President of the Eminence Chamber of Commerce who talked the Chamber and our local banks into providing the funding to get Extension started. The Henry County Local provided Carl with office space and a desk and the rest is history!

4H Camp Print Fund Raiser: The College of Agriculture and 4-H Youth Development operate four 4-H Camping Centers across the state. These facilities have been in operation since the mid 1960’s. Most of the buildings are originals. There is a need to perform much needed repairs on our buildings and modernize facilities. The camps must operate on the revenues they generate through camping fees. These fees are not enough to cover the repairs and renovations needed. Therefore 4-H is undertaking a multi-faceted fund raising campaign to raise the funds needed. One part of our campaign is the sale of camp prints. John Ward, a Kentucky artist from Mt. Sterling, was commissioned to paint a scene from each camp. From each original, there are 500 signed and numbered 16 x 20 prints available of each camp.
The prints are $35 each. Here is the Lake Cumberland 4-H Camp print. These may be viewed on the 4-H website at http://www.ca.uky.edu/agcollege/4H/camp/improvement/index.htm. There is also a brochure on this fund raising campaign and an order form on the website. Prints may be picked up at the 4-H Youth Development Office in Scovell Hall on campus or shipped to any location. The prints are beautiful scenes of nature at camp. They will make a great addition to any home or office. If you have questions just give Cathy Toole a call.

A Sad Farewell

Henry County Extension Service lost our co-worker and good friend Annmarie Ivers, as she lost her courageous battle with cancer. As Secretary of the Henry County Extension Service, Annmarie was that nice friendly voice on the phone that so many Henry Countians heard when they contacted the Extension Office for the past 23 years. Some called her just to get the phone number for some other person or office, knowing that she usually knew the number without looking it up. She was a walking phone book!

This Extension staff had a chemistry unmatched in the state. I’m not sure of the numbers, but I don’t know of any other County Extension Office who had more time together than here in Henry County. Annmarie had typed so many letters for us that she virtually could finish our sentences. Folks bringing in Soil Samples, bugs, plant diseases, and the like were treated quickly, accurately, and fairly. Annmarie could work with anybody. At the office, we had become a family, and we’ll sorely miss our good friend and co-worker. Our loss pales, however, to the loss felt by her family. Our thoughts go out to them in this difficult time.
